Resume for a Financial Analyst

Finance resumes are read by people who look at numbers all day. Vague quantification is more obvious to them than to any other audience.

What a hiring manager scans for first

  • Technical depth in Excel and the reporting stack"Advanced Excel" is meaningless on its own. Modelling, pivot work, Power Query, VBA if real, and increasingly SQL and Power BI — that is what gets read.
  • Which part of financeFP&A, treasury, audit, controlling and corporate finance are different careers. Say which in the first line.
  • Close and reporting cyclesMonth-end close, forecasting cadence and the size of what you are responsible for tell a hiring manager your actual level faster than a job title does.

The best resume format for this role

Reverse-chronological, single column, one page for under eight years. Finance is one of the few areas where a slightly denser layout is normal and expected. Keep a short technical line high up, and be exact about currencies and scale.

Skills worth listing

  • Modelling and analysis. Three-statement modelling, variance analysis, forecasting, budgeting, scenario analysis.
  • Tools. Excel to the level you would be tested on, plus the ERP: SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics. Name it — ERP experience is often a hard filter.
  • Reporting. Power BI or Tableau, and SQL if you have it. It is increasingly the differentiator in FP&A hiring.
  • Standards. IFRS or GAAP, and any qualification in progress. Say the stage honestly — "ACCA, 9 of 13 papers" is fine and is checked.

Keywords that matter — and the honest way to use them

Finance adverts are precise: "variance analysis", "month-end close", "budgeting and forecasting", "IFRS", the ERP name, and the qualification. Mirror the exact wording. Do not claim a part-qualified status you do not hold — it is verified at offer stage as a matter of routine.

Never add a keyword for something you have not done. The term gets you past the filter and straight into an interview where someone asks you about it. Matching should change how you describe real work, not what work you claim.

“Newly qualified accountant (ACCA, 2025) with four years in audit moving into commercial finance. Comfortable across IFRS, month-end and stakeholder reporting for portfolios up to £200m.”

Analyst moving to senior

“Finance analyst, six years across treasury and controlling. Built the cash-flow forecasting model now used group-wide and reduced forecast variance from 12% to under 4%.”

Experience bullets: before and after

The pattern is always the same — strong verb first, no first-person pronouns, and a number wherever one honestly exists.

Before

Responsible for the monthly reporting process and helping the team at close.

After

Owned monthly close for three business units; cut close time from nine days to five by rebuilding the reporting pack in Power Query.

Before

Assisted with budgeting and forecasting.

After

Ran the annual budget cycle for a £80m cost base across 11 department heads, delivering the consolidated budget two weeks ahead of schedule.

Worked on improving financial controls.

Introduced a reconciliation control across 14 balance sheet accounts, clearing a £1.2m aged unreconciled balance within two quarters.

ATS tips specific to this role

  • Give currency and scale. "Managed a budget" tells a finance reader nothing; "£80m cost base" tells them your level immediately.
  • Never put financial figures in a layout table. Use plain lines — tables are a common parsing failure.
  • State qualification progress precisely, including the body and the stage. Finance recruiters filter on it directly.
  • If you have both accounting and analytics skills, say so early. It is currently one of the strongest combinations in the market.

Common questions

How long should a financial analyst resume be?

One page if you have under about eight years of relevant experience, two if you genuinely have more to say. Length is not the point — a two-page resume where every line earns its place beats a padded single page.

Should I use a two-column template for a financial analyst role?

You can, but understand the trade-off. Some parsers read multi-column layouts row by row and splice unrelated text together. If you are applying through a large employer's portal, a single-column layout is the safer choice; for a direct application to a small company it matters much less.

Do I need to rewrite my resume for every application?

Not the whole thing. Rewrite the summary and reorder your bullets so the most relevant ones sit at the top of each role. That is usually 15 minutes of work and it is the part that actually changes your odds.
